Rafael Gonzalez!

Field Sights!

Rafael Gonzalez is the kind of photographer you just can’t believe to be true. Currently Barcelona based, he has an immense gift for knowing just the right moment to use his camera and to create timelessly beautiful images of his surroundings. It seems as if his black and white films love him as much as he does.

KALTBLUT: You obviously love black and white. Why black and white? What does it mean to you?

Rafael: I like shooting in black and white because of the granny mood, texture and contrasts I obtain with it; the final result allows me to express my day-to-day surroudings in a subjective and timeless way. It also makes me think a bit more about what to shoot or not as by shooting in black-and-white you have the opportunity to see what the scene really looks like.

KALTBLUT: How did you discover photography? Was there a special moment?

Rafael: I got into photography because of skateboarding, (some traveling involved also). In fact I got my first camera and started shooting and developing my films when I went to my first trip to Spain 7 years ago. Opening the developer tank and taking the negatives to the light to see the results was (and still is nowadays) such a great feeling, lot of curiosity and wondering about what came out of the film.

KALTBLUT: Do you prefer shooting urban or rural spaces?

Rafael: Actually I enjoy shooting both (rural and urban spaces), but if I had to choose one I would say urban areas, as most of my work is inspired by architecture, patterns, streets and citylife in general.

On the other hand I think its the best to have a balance between these two scenarios in order to keep fresh subjects and themes.

KALTBLUT: Was there a place (country/city/village) that has inspired and fascinated you most? Which one and why?

Rafael: The streets of Barcelona, Paris and Copenhagen have been such amazing sources of inspiration to me; it involves the vibe, the streets, people and everything in between. I just can’t explain it, just cruising around those cities makes me feel good! I recently came back from a trip to Copenhagen and Barca and shot a bunch of stuff when there, I’m still developing, scanning and doing some prints also which I plan to show around in a near future…stay tuned!
