Eylül Aslan!

Escaping Reality!

Young photographer Eylül Aslan is currently based in Istanbul, where she doesn’t really feel that she belongs. While hoping to be able to live in Berlin some day soon, she spends her time making some of the most stunning photographs you’ll get to see around. Her frames are original and unexpected but always remain a pleasant discovery that seems to jump out of some dream. She can turn the simplest thing into a work of art!

KALTBLUT: You come from Istanbul, a very cosmopolitan city. Would you say Turkey has influenced your work or not? Is it present in your photos? What else influences you?

Eylül: Yes, I would absolutely say that being born and raised in Turkey, especially in Istanbul has greatly influenced my work in so many different ways. The “general” understanding of esthetics in Turkey is pretty different from mine, I really cannot explain how it turned out that way since I was surrounded by this Turkish understanding of living, but it did and I really like to keep things clean, sharp, elegant and as simple as possible whereas Turkish society tend to like things to be really extravagant, shiny and in my opinion very disconnected. And honestly, I do not think Turkish people care for the esthetic of things all that much either…Anyone who has been to Istanbul would understand what I mean. Istanbul really is the kind of city that cannot be easily described, you really need to be here and experience it for yourself.

I feel like I try to show in my photos what is beautiful to me, what attracts my attention, whatever makes me feel something, any kind of feeling. And sometimes taking photos is a way to leave this Turkish environment that I do not really feel close to, so in a way photography becomes an escape from reality. And I think this is present in my photos, I often hear from people that they could not tell my photos were actually taken in Turkey, so maybe my photos show the Istanbul that belongs only to me :) What influences me often changes fast, but the essentials stay the same…sometimes I am obsessed with different textiles, shapes of things, light and shadow, colors, nature, sea, simplicity, transparency…

KALTBLUT: You have been to so many places! Which one would you choose to live in and why?

Eylül: I love traveling so much, when I am in one place for too long I feel trapped, I always need to explore and see new things. There are still so many cities that I want to visit but my heart belongs to Berlin. I love Berlin. I am so so so in love with Berlin and I do not care how “unoriginal” it is to love Berlin! I actually moved to Berlin in the summer of 2012 hoping to stay for a long time, but due to visa problems it is not that easy. I want to live in Berlin because I love the German way of thinking, their discipline, working ethics, the German language, the night life, the freedom, the weather (I hate summer) and the inhabitants. I feel like I can be the real me in Berlin whereas in Istanbul I often have to hide my real personality because of the prejudices of society.

KALTBLUT: All your photographs and series are unique. What is your creative process? How do you plan, etc?

Eylül: Maybe 90% of my photos are spontaneous. I enjoy being inspired by the moment, using whatever I have in my disposal. Planning things beforehand is a skill I am trying to learn. But I also take notes during the day whenever I think of an idea, then I try to realize the idea the next time I get a chance…I sometimes try my best to draw pictures of the ideas but I am not very good at drawing :) When it comes to working with people, models, I am really picky and there is this inexplicable feeling, comfort or closeness that I feel to some certain people and whenever I find this feeling the magic happens.

KALTBLUT: How important is the internet for a young artist? Has it helped you?

Eylül: It is very important and helpful. I started a flickr account because my cousin made me get one. She was my muse for a long time, so I started with taking photos of her and myself. Then I got a lot of attention that motivated me to take more photos. Through flickr, photographers and people in the business contacted me and I got job offers, worked as an assistant… Being a photographer was never my dream but since I found out how happy it makes me, it has become my dream and now I am living my dream so I feel blessed.
