A Review: Black On Black!

Muschi Kreuzberg throws party for new line!

During the last push of the always-busy, ever eclectic Berlin Fashion Week, local label Muschi Kreuzberg hosted their Black on Black Fashion Show party at Prince Charles to launch their brand new line, Black Chantal. Our resident writer, Jack Drummond, went along and he’s given us his scoop of the evening’s events. In the first of our brand new series, Where Jack Went, the boy himself takes a sideways look at the hedonistic party city of Berlin and comes to terms with his difficult love for the Berlin based label. 

Where Jack Went: My Difficult Love For Muschi Kreuzberg

“Last night I ended up dancing to hip hop. I don’t usually do this. In fact, it took me a while to get out of my usual house/techno two-four-step and realise I wasn’t doing a Berghain before I got into it. The Mate helped (Prince Charles does good ‘Charitea Mate’, cheers mate) so that I kinda came out of myself a little, looked around at all the beautiful people and realized what one hell of a well-curated party it was. Trashy beautiful: Berlin Fashion Week.This was Muschi Kreuzberg’s Black on Black Shit Shop aftershow thing at Prince Charles as part of Berlin Fashion Week; and this is how Muschi Kreuzberg do things.“Well curated party!” I ball at brand manager Leo Diamond at the back, getting air – the bass music is loud.”Yeah, the curation is excellent, isn’t it,” he says, nodding pretty eagerly I think for someone agreeing, then I scan it for sarcasm and think: “ah no, I actually said ‘curated’.”I used to live with the guy. It’s alright tho cos we got high together, y’know.”I love it when house kids have fun at the hip hop parties,” he says.

They’re celebrating the release of one of their most successful lines – ‘Chantal’, like Chanel, but not, and not Chantè (http://youtu.be/Z-5W2KOdVrI), yep – and there’s some bass and my friend Casey is teaching me how to move to it and it’s either a full front forward lean, one hand in the air slicing like with a gun yeah, or you can lean back slow and hit your shoulders up like this and so I opt for leaning back. Get it, grab fag, go dance. Bass Gang. The girls sit on the speakers. The boys are in circles dancing with each other – you know that kind of early in the night group dance you do when you’re not drunk enough yet to let go? That kind.

I move to the other room. 90′s hip hop. See I guy I saw in Panno on Sunday and we hug and give kisses on necks and then numbers. Why do I mention this? Because Muschi cultivate this hyper-sexualized hetero streetwear look (hence: > muschi) but then flips that with a sweaty ‘fuck you’ feel. Dicing with GEMA rights over Prodigy’s ‘Smack My Bitch Up’ by day and leading all the clean, straight-laced, straight-looking kids down to grotty nowhere by night – all with tongue not too far from cheek. But then there’s guys checking each other out in the corner and it makes sense.

This is what intern Jenny B’s says: “Muschi is like a father to us. He’s gay, we hardly ever see him and when we do, he beats us.”

Perfect symmetry.

Everyone continues to be fit. A friend tells me she feels something big is gonna happen just as Yung Lean & Sad Boys (Sad Boys Entertainment / SWE) get up and start prepping. So she goes up on the stage and is going at it a bit too heavy before I see Leo go over and move her. Yung Lean (who is this guy?) looks like some kind of 16-year-old scally off an estate back home, with Nike trackies and rapping in broken English and broken-Swedish-voice about takeaways and chips and saying ‘shit’ a lot. He’s magnetic and a core group of guys form a circle around him in the crowd but the rest of Prince Charles don’t really buy it. Which is a shame, cos you can tell he’s trying to be pure, and really he’s just on a fucking good one.

We head out to the späti for tobacco and I give some small change to a guy at Moritzplatz. Remembering this as I head back in, ‘Das Leben ist Kein Ubahnhof’ heads over towards me in the smoke on the front of some sweater and for all their macho machismo, Muschi have a heart. As part of the One Warm Winter project, proceeds of sweater, tees and hoodies with this emblazoned affirmation go to ‘our brothers and sisters on the street’, the outcast and the guys who’ve fallen through the net. Which is cool. Super fucking cool. Isn’t it? It is.

There’s scratches from the decks and the walls begin to get sweaty. Girls are grinding against boys now and the crew behind the decks look like the music is hurting them. DJ Shiftee (Hot Mom USA / NY) is painfully good. Somewhere between dubstep, DnB and the type of house that’s pretty Dutch, this New York Jewish man-boy with the golden decks (he won 2009 DMC World DJ Finals champion) holds aloft the drum machine he’s been bashing like it’s a trophy he’s suddenly got bored of and then there’s silence. People scream, and their eyes are rolling in their heads, pouting hard from-and-to this camera and its headlamp baring down at them from on high by this Muschi brand intern or something. And it’s hot. The music blasts back in. The clothes would come off if they could, but then they don’t cos everyone looks too good in them.

And then I realise: fuck, I’m in love with Muschi Kreuzberg. And I want one of those black t-shirts.”
